"Qesh i lumtur kur të pashë/I was happy when I saw you" is a short film (10'50") shot in Gjakova, which reflects on the feelings of guilt and shame and the cramps created in the body from being under constant public watch and evaluation.
Through the cementing of the city’s soul i.e. the loss of the "gift economy", the disappearance of houses, flourished gardens and ornamental doors, the gone days of afternoons spent caring for the living and the numerous visitors, in the loss of this community we were so dearly attached to
is hidden its oppressive and controlling language. The modernization and cementing of the city brings us to confront the fact that the language of control had become obsolete long ago, since the morality and justice it tried to uphold could easily disappear under the premise of the new "progressive" capitalistic and exploitative future.
The film attempts to parallel guilt, shame and rigidity, which are created under the pressure of authority, aiming to show how these concepts circulate in both the private and public spheres. By using both video and essay, these concepts are touched upon from the viewpoints of the private body - individual and the public body - society. The visual aspect tries to show the delineation between the private (the house) and the public (the street) and the unconscious attempt to hide what is "improper". The narrative aspect illustrates how a tight-knit community uses language to diffuse feelings of guilt and shame and to preserve and convince others to submit to that community's own feelings of inadequacy and instability.
